Never Been Kissed

By Bonnie Gray • June 21, 2010 • 26 Comments

“Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair.” ~ G.K. Chesterton

I don’t know if dogs and cats dream of getting their first kisses. One thing’s for sure, humans are different.

I remember wanting my first kiss so badly, I thought I was going to die waiting. I did not want to get to college and be the only girl on campus whose only kiss was her bathroom mirror.

Luckily, despite my mother’s best efforts and my propensity to like books and play in the orchestra (the cool kids were in band and track-and-field), I did get my first kiss before donning cap and gown.

The kiss was just as magical and dizzying as it appears in the movies.

But, it wasn’t true love.

Not for him, anyways.

It was a bummer.  The box for My First Kiss was checked off the same year as Dumped For The First Time.

Missing The Boat

Some people talk about not kissing anyone until they’re engaged, to end up marrying the first person they kissed. Real fairy tale like.

Too bad, I always thought.

Why didn’t God let the first guy I fall in love with be my husband?

It was the first of many why-questions I’d start filing secretly away.

Many years passed.  I could never find the magic of that first kiss again.

After some time, I grew up and got smart.  I stopped believing there was “The One”.

If I missed the boat with “The One”, then I’d rather just be by myself and God.

It’s just you and me, God.

I liked it just fine.

There was enough to keep me kingdom forward and connected with people.  Eight years fly by when you can serve with abandon, lots of friends to make and enjoy.

Then, one day, I met him…

Thanks Bonnie for your words of encouragement. I’ve just turned 32, am happy, but keep thinking that I’ve missed the bus. Your devotional today touched my heart about God being a God of new beginnings. Cheers.

Very well put, Liza! I was in a thirty-something when my story took a turn… for new beginnings. He’ll steer that boat of newness and have it set anchor, right next to you.

This post was so sweet. You sound so sincere with your writing. We had a trying weekend around here and I cannot even imagine writing some thing so sweet. You are lucky ….not only can you write it but you really seem to live it. Some where I believe I missed the boat…I feel like I am in a crazy storm at times and wondering how to straighten out the boat to keep my head a float.

    I guess that’s life though.

    Thanks for the nice thoughts…

Hi Kathy, it sounds like your heart is still tethered to safety, even with the rough storms battling your boat — because sweetness can still find it’s way to it. Keep hanging on. You aren’t forgotten.

Well, I haven’t made such good choices in the past. I told God that I needed Him to choose the next one. 🙂 So far, nada ~

The G.K. Chesterton quote is among my favorites. I really do try to live it.

And I remember well the first kiss from my Lord. It ignited a fire that some days is a roaring flame, and some days is hottest coals burning low.

Beautiful. I still remember my first kiss with my husband. I had the no kissing rule also, but mine was until my wedding day. I made it 8 months before we were even engaged. But I knew I would marry him and that was my way of telling him.
