Keep Doing Your One Thing (A Lisa Leonard Jewelry Giveaway)

By Bonnie Gray • January 18, 2011 • 412 Comments
*Special Lisa Leonard Jewelry Giveaway* Enter to win a $50 Gift Certificate for Lisa Leonard
Designs in today's post. Lisa creates meaningful, unique, handmade jewelry for both gals and guys.

Most people have already quit their New Year’s resolutions.  Sticking to your one thing will require faith, but it could be your biggest return yet.

So, you’ve picked your One Word For 2011 and like a new toy you open at Christmas, you haven’t been able to put it down. Not even for a second.

It’s been about two weeks since. Are you tempted to just forget the whole thing?

According to a study conducted by a British University professor, more than 50% of people who made new year resolutions quit one week later. A third of those who kept them had one thing in common: they shared their convictions with a family or friend.

You may find yourself drifting towards old patterns and fears. Don’t be discouraged.

Share with others to get encouraged.

Three ways to share your One Word:

1)  Keep sharing your One Word with God. He’s the one that put it there.

2)  Freshen up.  Look up the verses in the Bible that spotlights your One Word (or words close to it).

I use Crosswalk’s BibleStudyTools.com to do this fun exercise.  It’s amazing to hear God speak my One Word in so many different ways.

Type your One Word in the ‘Search’ box — and out spits the verses that uses your words.

It’s cool to see your One Word show up in different verses.  Just select a different translation in the pull down menu.

3) Share your One Word with family or friend.

Beware:  Share it with people who are for you and won’t deflate you.

If you haven’t done it, share your One Word here on Faith Barista ( Click here to submit your One Word post or word. )

We’ll be exploring our One Words together.  You have a safe community online here.

Who we are becoming is more important than what we are accomplishing.

We’re in the discovery together.

What’s Your Favorite Bible Coffee Drink?

coffeesplash1

~~ The Menu ~~

Black Coffee – Likes the Word plain and straight.

You are a hard core Berean, who enjoys printing out the text without paragraph breaks, line by line.

Your Bible is clean from notes or commentaries, just the Scriptures and maybe a concordance. You hold a separate collection of Bible dictionaries and commentaries for reference and stuff your notes in 3-ring binders that cause your shelves to sag.

Cappuccino – Likes the Word like a shot of espresso, indulged with frothy foam.

You enjoy digging into the Word with notes and commentaries readily available, inserted alongside the text.

Your Bible is a Study Bible, and it’s most likely the NASB translation, although you switch between that and NIV. You underline and make notes in the margin. The Good Book is covered in either (faux) leather or in a canvas Bible cover.

Latte – Likes the Word, rich and creamy, and enjoys a foamy mustache.

You love walking through the Word with companions of devotional thoughts or inspirational questions.

Your bookshelf is never short of a fave devotional or Bible Study series. Your Bible might be a Life Application Bible, or it’s simply paired with your favorite “Daily Bread” or stacked on top of a study book.

Mocha – Likes the Word, like a chocolaty treat, a rich confectionery splurge.

You love journaling in the Word, reflecting on Christian writing, meditations or even art, music and photography.

The Word comes alive in a mosaic of artistic expressions. Your Bible might be a Journaling Bible where you weave whatever prompts your heart into God’s words. You are an artist who takes in the Word and sees it reflected in unexpected places.

What is your favorite Bible drink?

Don’t like coffee but LOVE the Word of God… I guess that makes me Latte. I love reading with devotionals and my Bible lately. I use to be Cappuccino and still often refer back to my Study Bible.

And in real life I love having Chai Tea Latte.

I am Cappuccino With a sprinkle of Latte. Interesting how you unfolded my Bible study time with those cappuccino words. I am sure like many of you would agree this coffee keeps greeting sweeter. Think I’ll take another drink tonight before I go to bed

  • Reply Nancy January 18, 2011 at 4:49 am

My tastes have been changing in recent years. I used to be more cappuccino, but find myself becoming more mocha. For much of my life, I approached God’s word academically but am now finding the Spirit applying truth and feeding my soul as I meet others who speak God’s word to me in art, music, poetry, and photography.

I am black coffee and a once-in-a-while latte. That keeps things mixed up on a great level for me. Thank you so much for how you present and help us along on this site.

  • Reply Kathy January 18, 2011 at 5:32 am

    I am a cappuccino girl! Last year when I bought my bible I considered myself a “newbie” into the reading of the bible. I had so many questions that the only bible that made sense was to buy the one which gave more explanations and “behind the scenes commentary”. ;-}

Nice give away…although I haven’t posted here what MY word of 2011 is….. I have posted a couple of times on my blog about my word. TRUST!

I am trusting in the LORD for strength in myself, my family and my life. It’s a great word!

My 2011 word is TRUST found in the NIV 87 times. That surprised me. I thought it would be more than that! My coffee – black with a dollop of frothy foam. 🙂

  • Reply Jennifer Mariss January 18, 2011 at 6:27 am

My one word would definitly be FORWARD as it`s nessacary for me to spread the word of GOD, and that can`t be done in one word.

  • Reply Mary January 18, 2011 at 6:33 am

I guess I’d be a Mocha Cappucino! I love my study Bible since it answers questions I have immediately. But I LOVE reading devotionals and Christian authors who really make me think.

OK I just LOVE how you put it in coffee form.
I’m a cross between Mocha and Black I think. Depending on the where I am at the moment.
Which is too funny since (aside from a little cream) those are the only ways I take my real coffee.

I love Lisa’s stuff. And even if I don’t win I am going to get my word for myself for Valentines day. :o)

Ah, the smell of coffee draws me in – the taste – not so much. However, the way you described the study of the Word helps me find myself among coffee terms. In this year of transformation, I notice a benefit from added flexibility in my approach to time in the Word; new ways work my muscles differently. So, as a longtime cappaccino kind of gal, I am now mixing in the mocha and latte throughout the week. I am tasting and seeing how good the Lord is, no matter what my preference.

    Enjoy the week!

What a great idea, my word is faith! I asked the Lord for a verse for this year and He gave me Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage ; be not afraid , neither be thou dismayed : for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Faith is the opposite of fear. I want to have faith, more and fear, less. Thanks for all the great Words of encouragement you share!

Too. totally. funny!!! I’m the tea drinker remember–but I am SO very much a Cappuccino! I really have NO idea what is in a real cappuccino, but I have the Precepts Inductive Study Bible in the NASB version in real leather and zipped into the IISB case because it is stuffed with loose notes and there must be a place for my pen and colored pencils for notes and highlighting. And yes, I got the PISB because of the wide margins so there is LOTS of room for making notes, marking and writing in Bible dictionary and original word defs and personal “aha’s”! I am so laughing over this, Bonnie! 🙂

How interesting to have our Bible reading and study traits linked to coffee. And in my case so true. I love cappuccinos and I also have an NIV Study Bible in a leatherette cover (Have had it for years). I have tried and read other versions over the years but I always return to it because I like the study notes. Now I have begun Bible College classes and I have bought a NKJ version but with study notes. The cappuccino trait !

You can find me sliding up to the coffee bar and ordering two- cappuccino and mocha. My Bible is an NIV study Bible with notes and journalings. I underline verses, color code key words and highlight in the study notes. Along margins are notes and journal writings, quotes and dates, names of the people for whom I pray that specific Scripture.

My latest journal note: Psalm 18:24 The Message version right next to the NIV inked on my page…. “God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to His eyes.”

When this Bible is all written over and colored the new one is chosen and with a deep breath I embark on the next. The adventure of living out the living Word. The ink of His Word flowing in and through my life.

It was fun to figure out my favourite Bible Coffee drink. I think I’m mainly a Latte but from time to time go for the Mocha (this is my coffee-drinking style too). I start my day with my bible and two devotionals but sometimes when time permits, I enjoy journalling how the Lord speaks to me and reflecting on Christian writing.

    Thanks Bonnie!

I would say I was definitely a cappuccino drinker. Not only is my Bible, a Thomson Chain Reference, marked up with highlighter and notes in the margins, but I also bought those little stickie note flags and flagged pages of the verses I had highlighted. There are so many that I have a hard time finding a particular book when listening to a sermon because of all the flags!

I love my leather-bound NIV Study Bible – it feels like a friend when I pick it up, and I know I’m going to get to have a great conversation with the Lover of my Soul, but I also really dig good devotionals and always have 2-3 going at a time. God speaks to me so much through those, and leads me to dig deeper and more meaningfully into His word through them. 🙂 I’m a newbie to your site, but am so glad I found it! 🙂 (Came over from in-Courage.)

what fun! The funny thing is, I don’t drink coffee but I love the fragrance.

I guess it depends on the day….

I like it latte when on the computer reading awesome blogs like this.

Sometimes when I am fearful or anxious, I like it ‘black’.

When in a Bible study or Sunday School, I like it cappuccino style, writing in the margins and taking notes to try and remember nuggets of wisdom.

Most mornings I like it ‘mocha’. I light a candle and try to make the ambiance extra special before my girls wake up and rock the house.

It really is awesome how God has made all these tastings available to us no matter what the preference. May God bless you in your writings! You have inspired me!

  • Reply marina bromley January 19, 2011 at 6:06 pm

I’m a straight up black, but mix a “poor man’s mocha” every now and again…instead of sugar or cream, I’ll dump in a packet of hot chocolate mix….
How does this translate in my Bible reading?? I LOVE reading God’s word straight from the Bible, but prefer the NLT version to read…and going to other translations for additional options of how it reads. I’m a junkie of biblegateway.com and can bounce around there all day!! : )

Nothing is ever simple with me, my favorite is Mocha Latte! My bible is well used, highlighted, underlined, notes written in the margins, between lines, wherever there is space. Pages have fallen out and have been tucked back into the correct books but maybe not the right chapters, and maybe upside down or backwards! I also have sketched inspirational visions, written short phrases or poems and thoughts or questions to “discuss with God” in prayer.

I have a canvas plaid book cover with pockets jammed full of old bulletins & notes. The zipper has an old celtic cross keychain and a memorial stone book mark from a young Marine’s funeral. I’m a collector, artist, thinker and my Bible definitely looks it. It looks like a well loved, cozy room. 🙂 Gonna go subscribe now. God Bless!

In 1990 a lady told me she thought it would help me if I began reading a chapter a day from my Bible. God’s word has helped…even me!
My Bible doesn’t have a front cover anymore. I have underlined and highlighted words on just about every page. I really need to buy a new Bible, but I kinda like this old one.

I have been trying to live my word. But you are right…doing it quietly sometimes makes me forget. I especially love your first suggestion: Share my word with God. Isn’t he the one who put it in my heart. I think I’ll be having some jam sessions with God about hope in the future.

    Black coffee for me please.

  • Reply Becky F January 20, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I am a little of each at different times. I have all the devotionals and Christian books to read alongside and like a good latte regularly, but for my real time in the word I like it black. I keep the helps and cream handy if I want them. I love the ESV the best, but I also love to have the amplified nasb and niv handy to compare. If I have the time I get out the Message to read it alongside the translations. I love Lisa Leonard’s jewelry. Thanks for the giveaway.

My One Word for this year 2011 is FAITHFUL (trustworthy)-

The Lord has been faithful to me and proven Himself time and time again-even when & especially when I have been nothing but faithful to Him. I have still found Him True and Faithful to who He is and how amazing His love is Unfailing unto me-His Grace & Goodness unto me only make me fall in love with Him more and more because he doesn’t give me what I deserve-time and time again He takes me back & His goodness and mercies follow me all the days of my life!

I pray that his year, He leads me to paths of righteousness and makes my heart more faithful unto Him. May I learn this year in a deeper way the One who is truly Faithful-amen

I would have to say mocha, although I kinda go in and out of seasons in which each becomes the drink I prefer. I think for me no one way will ever be the only way I want to come to scripture. Love the question!

  • Reply Beth Werner Lee January 21, 2011 at 11:45 pm

I think I’ve done all of the above.
I really like the question and took some time to think about it.
Don’t really know at the present.
Can I go for sweet Americano?
Strong expresso with the water of babbling or writing responses:
I’ve been reading on iPad in the mornings
and One Year Devotional to 10 year old at bedtimes…
and memorizing Colossians, two verses a week
and 1 Corinthians 13 for school
and sometimes if things are good verses pop into my head and come out my mouth, tickling Theologian Husband’s fancy.
but in Bible study I love to use colored pencils and mark up the text printed out double space for that purpose,
and in VBS I adapted skits to tell the stories to the kids and it came alive for me too,
and so I think I’m going to look into the Journaling Bible.
Thanks for letting me babble (brook) and hope it wasn’t too long!

Cappucino. 10 years or so ago, I heard Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill in Seattle preaching, telling how he keeps a Bible for 5 years with notes in the margins, then writes a letter to one of his children in the front, and sets it aside to give them on their 18th birthday. I have cancer, so I sped up my timeline. A Bible every three years. A different translation every time. Right now, I am reading two – one for each of two of my four children, because I’m not sure how long I have left. In 2012, I will switch to my very last one – one for my son, who is now 3. I pair my notes and comments and thoughts with the Word, hoping they leave a rich legacy of my (undying) faith for my children, even if I die before they are old enough to deeply share it with them.

Asking what God thinks. Awesome. We need to remember that in every walk of life, every decision we make. Even the little things… “Well God, what do you think?” I too felt that singleness might be in my future…But God. But God had a different plan. I have to confess, I hated dating! Im really glad Im not doing it anymore!:) I really love what God said to you, ” if there is no other, trust that I’ll be that Someone for you in the end.” God will always be my most special someone!

  • Reply Nancy February 3, 2011 at 10:33 am

I remember the time in my life when I was called to singleness, when I met a dynamic Christian speaker who seemed so perfectly content to be single and so passionate about her ministry. I wanted to be just like her. A dear friend pointed out that it wasn’t her singleness that I should be impressed by or trying to emulate, but her contentment. And Paul encourages us to learn to be content whatever our circumstances.

I’m just coming across your blog from incourage and started reading. I decided to comment on this one even though its a few days old. I am my own worst enemy. I’m not sure critic is a good word for me. But if I were to use critic it was engrained in my mind from childhood. I could never do ‘enough’ to be right. Or so I thought. So I didnt deal with it. I kept getting deeper and deeper inside myself as the walls kept going up. One. Brick. At. A. Time. For years! The past few years I have spent working through a lot of issues. 8 months of last year I spent focusing on my past and those issues. This issue of being my own worst critic was a big part of it also. Through lot of counseling, praying, crying, yelling, secluding myself for days on end to sift through my past and lots and lots of writing, I learned a lot. The biggest thing was learning/believing that I am loved by God. Period. Whatever I do he will love me. I do not need to be or pretend to be ‘together’ because He knows I am not. And still loves me for being me.

Hope for this year? It started to seep into my heart and mind just after the first of the year. I started to believe the changes in me are real. They are from God so they are right. I am not the same as I used to be because He is my foundation now.

The verse I chose for this year–(I’ve had one or two verses for each year the past few years that have pulled me through whatever the issue)–“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.” Phil. 1:6.

I believe this, so this is my hope!
    Lisa

God has been showing me in so many ways He desires to fill my longings and needs with Himself. I’m longing to know Him at a deeper level, moment by moment. There isn’t one problem, one opportunity that He can’t handle. I crave the fulfillment of all He wants to reveal in me and through me. May we crave Him! He is worthy!

  • Reply Jordy February 7, 2011 at 7:54 am

I always assumed I had to be friends with the guy first, then date them at least a year, be engaged at least a year and then get married.

Turns out, I met my now husband the night after I had given up on dating, we knew instantly, we dated for three months, were engaged for six months and were married nine months to the day that we had initially met.

From that, I learned that God’s plans are perfect and to let my timeline go…

  • Reply DiNa February 7, 2011 at 2:34 pm

I just finished reading your article on “Confessions About Singleness and Dating.” On the eve of my 30th birthday I want to thank you for sharing your insights and revelations you gleaned in your journey of singleness. I specifically felt empowered by the words the Lord spoke to you regarding your singleness.

As I embark on the adventure of being a thirty year old tomorrow. I take with me the truth that God shared with you. I too agree that if there is a potential spouse for me, he will be found in Jesus. On the other hand, if there is no future husband for me, then my Jesus will be and is my husband. My spiritual husband.

    Thank you. 🙂

Bonnie, it seems so easy to say that we are loved. That we have always been loved. But so hard to believe. I love the idea of the fire, the fuel and the oxygen. Nothing burns without all three.

I also think that those old voices in our head, old ghosts that come over for coffee can damp the fire down and starve it of oxygen. Those voices becomes louder than the still, small voice.

‘You are loved, you always have been.’

Sending you love today x Claire
