You and I, we’ve become confidantes through the words written here.

But today is special. I want to tell you the story a different way.

You were there when I could not breathe. When I thought I would never write again.

You were there when all I could offer were bitter tears and a journey that was as hard as it was uncertain.

Just when I thought my childhood dreams were going to finally come true.

To finally have a voice.  To be me.

But, at the brink of that dream coming true, the memories I once told myself were no longer stories.

As my pen hit the paper, they came alive. And I began reliving them.  

Painful memories, re-ignited by the act of writing. Pulling me into storms of panic attacks, debilitating insomnia, and anxiety.

As I laid there on my bed — teeth chattering cold one minute, inflamed in hot flashes the next — I thought of you.

You Didn’t Walk Away

I’ve always turned to words in books for comfort as a child. But, God knew I needed more than the refuge of the printed page.

He brought you into my life.  You didn’t walk away as I believed you truly would.

I still remember that one morning I sat down to write and tell you what was happening to me.  Fearful to publicly confide in such shameful distress.

Instead of leaving me with silence, you shared — your stories with me.  

Through comments. Emails. Facebook. Twitter. Even though I could not reply.

Some of you wrote with me, linking up on Thursdays.

Many more of you have been keeping company by reading quietly.

And for some of you, you heard the voice of your friends, daughters, sisters, and husbands through my story.

Like letters sent to me in prison, your words soothed me like the welcome of morning dew on the blades of a weary soul.

For You & Me

There, in the pit of my dark journey, your kinship was light.

For the first time in my life, I wasn’t so alone anymore.

The kind of writing God knew I needed to write — needed you.

You’ve transformed my journey from brokenness to beauty into a journey of kindreds.

And this is how I offer this book to you today —  as a gift between kindreds.

I wrote it one letter — one chapter at a time — to you. What I thought should have taken 9 months to write has become three years.
