The Journey Begins! Spiritual Whitespace Book Club & A Soul Exciting Giveaway (Whispers of Rest Artwork by RedLetterWords & Bonnie Gray)

By Bonnie Gray • January 22, 2015 • 151 Comments

FindingSpiritualWhitespace_BookDaySpringToday, the Online Spiritual Whitespace (Face)Book Club is finally launching!  Join by simply liking my Facebook Page. I’ll post the book club there using #soulrestbookclub, so we can organically interact in the comments with each other. It’s free. Just get a copy of my book and a fresh journal. Awaken your heart to rest.

To celebrate, I have some amazing news to announce with a very soul exciting GIVEAWAY in today’s post (I’ve been squealing with excitement waiting to tell you, friends)!

But, first things first…

This might sound crazy, but God actually loves to spend time with you.

We often worry about how to spend time with God, struggling with how we can reach him.

But, what if it was the other way around?

What if God was the one longing for you — to let Him into your world — to explore together what it is that moves your heart and feeds your soul?

If we could only believe it — really believed it enough to try it — we’d hear His quiet, soft whispers to you. And me.

You are loved.  Cherished.

You’re worth it.  just rest.

God intimately resides deep in our hearts and He longs for us to share our hearts with Him.

Loved — Whispers of Rest Collection by RedLetterWords & Me

Think for a moment. What Jesus once said to believers when the apostle John wrote it down for us. I actually hear Him whispering these words so gently to us today —

“Listen! I am standing at the door and knocking.

If you hear my voice and open the door,

I will come into your home and

share a meal with you,

and you with me.” Rev.3:20

The door Jesus is standing behind is the doorway to your heart.  And no one can open it except you.

And the home Jesus longs to step into? It’s the innermost place where you can just be you. And nothing and no one else.  Where you and I most deeply long for someone to see us. Love us. As is.  To laugh. Cry. Dream. Rest.

To be known.  Isn’t that home?

Rest — Whispers of Rest Collection

Sharing a meal with you… what does that mean?  Will you let him into what feeds your soul?

What are the things you like to do — and the things you don’t like to do?

Will you dare to let God — in moments of spiritual whitespace — refresh your soul with what uniquely refuels you (the most simplest things will do).  And let go of what simply drains you (even the things that appear to be no-brainer to others)?

And you — share a meal — with me.  You. with. me.

We forget that part.  I forget that part.  Jesus wants you to share with Him.  Feed your soul with me.  Do you hear His whispers too?

His whispers of rest invite you to rest in the One who calls you His.

Heart — Whispers of Rest Collection

The busyness and stress of other people’s expectations, fear of not being enough and just being on autopilot mode may have overwhelmed our schedules.

But, rest is just one whisper away. Because Jesus is standing here holding onto us — longing to wash over and awaken us with rest.

Maybe all we’ve ever known to do is to cope.  And make a way for ourselves, with God — but with our heads.  We’ve never let soul rest into our hearts.

That’s okay.  Jesus whispers —

Listen.  Confide.  Draw near.

Listen — Whispers of Rest Collection

And He’ll never, ever stop whispering to us.  Because we are His.

A new journey is beginning.  You can begin anywhere.  Just begin.

The book Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest has transformed my life, as Jesus led me to experience it first hand.

And I know #SpiritualWhitespace will transform yours too.

Together, we’ll become the beloved. His Beloved.

How the Book Club Works

Just like a beautiful hike, I’m going to be your guide to create space in your heart and schedules for rest. This will all happen on my Facebook page:

I’ll post devotional goodies to encourage you.

We’ll have fun exploring and trying new ideas.

We’ll have soulful conversations in the comments section.

We’ll read just two chapters of Finding Spiritual Whitespace together every week and respond to the journaling prompts at the end of each chapter.

Responding to the journaling prompts is what will turn this journey into a real experience in your heart between you and God.  By simply reflecting and listening, you’ll create some whitespace and experience soul rest right away.  Remember research shows that express writing for 15-20 minutes just three to four months can improve our physical and emotional well-being.

Loved the Revelation passage as a draw for the Lord to feed my soul. I have heard that still small voice from him many times drawing me away while in the middle of some crazy busy ness to sit with him a minute. Loved your book.

Today, just thank you, dear Bonnie, knowing you somehow rest even while you are working for Christ. ☺

I need this so much. I know God is asking me to slow down and I am praying through this. Single mom to special needs child and working full time while going to school part time. Something has to change for my soul to rest.

From one fellow Bonnie to another…I’ve been reading your book for many months now, each chapter speaks to me so deeply that I have to pray and meditate over what I learn before moving to the next chapter. I’m almost finished, but so excited to start over again with you as my guide this time! Thank you for so bravely sharing your story and your heart. Life with Jesus is such an adventure, but rest with Him is crucial and it was missing from my life for years. Thank you for being a big part of teaching me of its importance and how it leads to joy. (I shared your post as well.)

God brought me to Bonnie’s blog long before the book writing and PTSD journey. Her writing has to encouraged and blessed me. I am excited and a little nervous to do this study because I know I need it. Rev 3:20 is my spiritual Birthday verse. God is good and faithful and he will finish his plan for me. Thank you Jesus. Thank you Bonnie for your obedience and hard work.

    My Quiet Place

I come to the safety of my quiet place
To share the words of my heart.
I come to the place of my soul’s creation
Where my journey to healing can start.

I reveal my wounds to God’s loving gaze
And I’m healed by the light of His grace.
His tears fall upon me like a gentle rain
As I am held in His warm embrace.

He weeps as He feels the depth of my pain.
His sadness shows on His face.
Here I find peace so I can heal
At home in my quiet place.

My soul finds rest through laughter created when playing with children. It reaches a part of me that was created deep within that I never realized until teaching preschool was snatched away with lies and false accusations. I have some friends who share their kids with me and I play with them. The problem is finding the time to go play.

  • Reply Kim Salmans January 22, 2015 at 7:22 am

Taking the time to stop and really listen for God’s whisper is hard to do. Realizing how important it is to rest and really listen is a huge step for me. Rest and listen. God seeking my soul and calling for me. What amazing words to hear. He loves me and wants me. Enough said. Rest oh, my soul. Makes me relax just focusing on those words and listening for them. God is good all the time.

I love my quiet time with the Lord and reflect on how the space within my heart is prepared for my Lord to rest and find fellowship. I want it to be inviting clean open and airy, a place where God can feel at home and see that I have been trying to live a purposeful life! I am taken to the daily devotion where i find His encouragement thru the word and feel refreshed and ready for the day. And as the day enfolds with all it’s twist and turns , I know that i can come again to find God waiting to share and encourage me again thru His word and Love! This space is our santuarary where we can be real and be healed from life’s bruises…
In Him we live and move and have our being!! Book of Acts

It is at those moments when everything is blowing up around me and I suddenly realize I need to just be quiet, to let the Lord in to quiet my heart, to let me rest. When I do this even if my surroundings or situation has not changed I find the rest and peace in my heart with God gives me immense strength. I find if I start and end my day with peace and rest in Him the rest of my day with Him in my heart makes it a restful and peaceful day.

    Bonnie,
I’m slowly realizing that yes, God does want to spend time with us! It’s almost hard to grasp this idea but it’s true and that’s what makes our faith journey so amazing and mysterious! When I journal, my soul is quiet and better able to hear his whisper. Thank you for opening your lovely site again for us to share our posts with your readers!

  • Reply Tina January 22, 2015 at 8:26 am

God has been calling me, for about a year now, to His wilderness. I go every chance I get. It’s in those spaces I find Him and a deep rest. But my struggle is when I am at home. How do I find that peace and rest with Him when everything is calling out at me? I’ve been keeping a cleaner home so that when I do rest in Him, I’m not worried about all the duties I feel I need to accomplish in a day.

  • Reply Bonnie January 22, 2015 at 8:27 am

Stillness. But change. I feel them both. This year I know, deep in my spirit I know, God is going -too change- me, my family. Out year last year was dark. Death of husband my kids’ father. I don’t have a clue as to what God is gong to do, but I believe it to be amazing.

  • Reply Cindy Rogers January 22, 2015 at 8:29 am

Yes, He created us to worship Him. We make it too much of a struggle to spend time with God, when He just wants us to relax in Him, rest in Him, and accept His love for us. Thank you.

  • Reply cindy January 22, 2015 at 8:33 am

    What feeds my soul:
The ocean, bird watching, long strolls on th beach, nature, swimming, reading books, listening to music, hanging with my bestie, curling my toes in warm sand, making art, photography, yummy food, corporate worship at church, playing with my dogs, petting my bunny and cat, a nap!

  • Reply Deb Weaver January 22, 2015 at 8:35 am

Last year, he more than whispered, “Freedom” in my life. This year, He’s whispering, “Listen.” In order to continue in freedom and to find rest, I really need to listen.

God has been talking to me about trusting Him, resting in Him, leaning on Him. A recent reading called it leaning on Jesus “trust-staff”. I come to Him weary, thirsty, hungry, and He gives me rest, fills my cup, and feeds me with His daily living bread. I just need to learn to keep my focus and curl up in my Abba’s lap and know His arms will catch me if I fall.

I’ve followed your journey Bonnie. When you could barely write. The posts that you would get out to the world resonated with my soul, like you were indeed a soul sister. When the book was published, I was so excited for you and for me, as I was able to read it. My first time through the book, I just read and wept. I knew that I would need to go deeper, and delve into the writing assignments. Thank you for the time and energy you’ve put into reaching out to so many “soul sisters” who are longing to connect in a deeper way to Jesus.
I’m so excited to start this book club, and for the way I know God will speak to each and everyone involved.
I’ve shared on FB, inviting friends to also join.
    Hugs to you~

Thank you for this Bonnie. I have been coasting on autopilot for too long. The busyness creeps in and I began to coast…I’m longing to just begin. Begin to pay attention, even to the little things. To see the hand of Christ in the ordinary. To be home where I am known, and can just be me. Beautiful post! Love your words!

Rest seems to be a theme for me lately… when first diagnosed with chronic depression, I tried to stay busy and learn everything I could about it, and was resigned to it’s effects. But then God started to show me how the dysthymic mind needs rest, adequate, frequent, rest, in order not to fall prey to all the triggers that can cause a depressive spiral… and not just any rest, but pure rest in Him. And then along came your beautiful book and confirmed everything I needed to know about rest and spiritual whitespace, and that even someone with a mood disorder can shine for Him 🙂

I love the come, confide, and draw near print. It has been so hard to pray, read my bible, and figure out what I’m supposed to say and do with God lately. I have just been using the whitespace prompts. I often just picture sitting with Jesus on a cool night or a morning on the beach and just leaning on him like a friend. Sometimes confiding, sometimes saying nothing. Just being there with him as I am.

  • Reply Trudy January 22, 2015 at 10:13 am

This is beautiful as always, Bonnie. It struck me how God longs for us and is waiting on the other side of the door that we need to open. Too often I am longing for Him and yet not opening the door. Now I imagine Jesus longing for me and begging me to open the door. May we all learn to invite Him in freely and fully!

I’m looking forward to your Book Club!

Bless you Bonnie, So glad that you posted this 1st day of the Book Club on Faith Barista (where I often visit without leaving my mark and I even follow you-not sure if it’s anonymously or how, cuz I don’t do that “follow” deal just add your URL to blogs I read)

Anyways, I have your precious book and I’m ready to go except that I don’t do Facebook. {I use a friend’s every once in awhile that I set up but I don’t have my own} so I was wondering, will you be sharing the Book Club stuff here on your blog as well? (please)

I noticed a page/tab up above that says “book club” but this was not there so ??? I’m hoping and wondering (at least share as you did today and what we should be reading, OK?). I’ve now read through the assignment (page 32-33) and so now I have on some beautiful, restful, instrumental music with a beach scene (contemplating if this is the one for me, although I also like the “white canvas”) … pondering on my “whitespace” image with Jesus Waiting for Him to speak and prompt me through His sweet Holy Spirit, so when He does … I will attempt to do the journal assignment.

Since I don’t know what’s happening at FB … I really do hope that you can share here too! Thanks … ( a former lurker in the background of Faith Barista) but I have linked to you for others to come and enjoy your “spiritual” rest and words. Thank you, Bonnie.

I’m sitting here with tears on my face because your words are so timely for me. The thought that God would send THESE words for me to read at THIS moment, is incredible to me. I’ve been wrestling with burnout and depression the past several months and a friend suggested your book. I’ve only worked through the first two chapters so far, and they are eerily relevant to me right now. Thank you for your vulnerability to share your story (your pain, your struggles and your faith) with us. God is speaking through you. And I am grateful.

So excited to start the book club. Almost finished with the book but looking forward to reading it again sloooowly and savoring each chapter. Also, doing a similar (but much smaller) book club with my blog. Yeah!

  • Reply Dee January 22, 2015 at 1:32 pm

A few months back, I was in a spiritual desert. My journaling halted and it was hard to reach out to God. There had been an upset in my life and I couldn’t get back to the rich spiritual life I had enjoyed for a long time. I am so sensitive that just someone saying something hurtful can send me into a tailspin. I thought I was in a safe place and a woman who was in a bad place said hurtful things to me. I guess most people would have shaken it off, but I’ve always had trouble doing that. It took several months for me to process this incident. I think during that time God was healing my spirit and speaking to me spirit to soul. I couldn’t get over the hump of what felt like a betrayal. I knew what she said was not accurate. Others told me they thought so also. ‘She’s in a bad place in her life and lashed out at you,’ some said. Still the grief took its course. Finally, in the fall, the silence ended and the joyous response to my Abba returned. Lots of good things have been happening and I let God take care of the whole incident. He blessed me with many happy events that I think helped to heal my heart. I did not try to fix it because I didn’t think I could. Abba took care of me and the situation and brought me back to my creative, expressive, happy place. I am stronger, more rested and full of more blessings He is pouring out on me.

“Maybe all we’ve ever known to do is to cope.” – YES! This is it. I like to read, and walk, and watch my daughter sing and dance. I like that moment when the preschoolers I work with are let outside to play and they explode out the door!! I love to get lost in a fiction book, I like to nod my head and whisper ‘yes’ and learn something new from a non-fiction book. I like to laugh with the people who are able to see the funny side of things (even the hard things). I like when my husband looks me in the eye and smiles.

Loved your book, Finding Spiritual Whitespace! The most poignant quote for me was, ” I lost a beautiful, fragile part of my soul that day: my ability to simply
receive.” I am so ready to discover a renewed ability for my soul to receive! Your book has opened my eyes and heart to so many things that hinder and induce that ability! The things I love, that energize me, are: gardening, birds, sunshine, trails & rocks to climb, crafting, creating, journaling my prayers, quiet, contemplative space, shopping, cozy blankets, all things nature, conversations with my hubby on the deck, wow! I didn’t realize there was so much! This makes my heart happy!

    • Reply Sue January 23, 2015 at 2:41 am

      Bonnie,
I loved the book. It is one of the best I have ever read in nourishing my soul. As a full-time caregiver, I no longer get to church, but rarely, so I depend heavily on books and the internet—but then, I have always had a passion for reading, and especially so when it comes to Christian nonfiction.
I have always had a passion for letter writing—the old fashion way, in cursive. I do not type well, and typing frustrates me. I also enjoy nature photography and making pictures into cards for encouraging others.

    I have to laugh…my last year’s word was “rest!” God’s bringing it into 2015 so I don’t forget i suppose! I am excited to join you for this book club that is encouraging me to write again; however, I am so not computer literate. I think I did something wrong in the linkup…the “badge” is on my blog, and I did just go back and copy the link i guess that needed to also be on my blog post. No matter what links i click on though, i am not linking up to the page where everyone was listed with their blog posts about their one word. Is that the page i’m supposed to get when i “linkup?” {i warned you! :)}

    • Reply Bonnie Gray January 22, 2015 at 6:47 pm

there is a blue button called “Add Your Link” at the end of my Thursday blog post. If you click it, it will bringyou to a page wher eyou can enter in the specific url of your blog post, pick a thumbnail (photo on your blog post) and submit, then it will show up with everyone. thanks Diana! so glad you’re writing and in the book club journey. looking forward to hearing what you discover with Him.

I can get too caught up in planning and productivity. I am trying to incorporate some of your suggestions into my hectic life. Thank you!

I am excited to start reading your book. It should be showing up on my door step any day now. I look forward to living life with you all and discovering what I need in my life to help me become all that God has designed me to be. Sometimes I think I know who I am and why I am here. But I don’t know completely because knowing comes from experiencing time with God. I believe God has so much more to show me. I sense that we are all on common ground here. I am desperate for my life to be filled with passion. I’m tired and I hunger for more of God. I need white space in my life.

First of all, I had to share this blog post on Facebook! And I loved this post. I linked up today which is one day late but I’ve been thinking about your prompt all week Bonnie. It caused me to really think about what feeds my soul. As I’ve said before, I am such a balance between a popular sanguine and a peaceful phlegmatic personality. I am with people so often and then I crave quiet and peace and being alone. I loved writing about this very topic so thank you. I am so excited about the Whispers of Rest collection. I have to say that my favorite is the Loved one.

I started reading your book during a time when I started writing again, and now am working on my new blog. Bonnie’s words give me the white space to commune with God. He has been speaking to me in ways that saturate my soul with joy. Thank you, Bonnie.

Begin Anywhere. Just Begin. That stood out to me today as my heart is heavy for my sweet son. He is a second year college student at Palm Beach Atlantic University. (doesn’t that seem fitting with the colors of this print?!) He is frozen, numb, and battling procrastination. School grades have always been a struggle for him, and now the pressure to know what he wants to do career wise is weighing on him. He is strong in his faith and is aware of the battle going on inside. I picture this little print of encouragement on his wall. Begin anywhere. Just begin. as a reminder to what we talk about often…just do the next thing. Actually, I think any college student needs that reminder!

  • Reply Tonya January 24, 2015 at 5:58 am

To be known. Those words caught my attention as that is such a heart cry for myself and many, many other women. We long to be known by those around us, our husbands, our friends, our coworkers, but we so easily forget that we are known by Christ. Known by Christ. Puts all the rest into perspective for me. Thanks for sharing your encouraging words. I just found your blog today for the first time and I always marvel at how I seemingly stumble onto a new blog on the day their words speak straight into what my heart needs at the time. Of course, I know it’s not stumbling at all but the beautiful guidance of the Spirit speaking to me. 🙂

Your book could not have come at a more needed time in my life (thanks to my Sis-in-love for buying me the e-book). God has me on my own journey of healing and trudging through past hurts. In some ways, I was perfectly fine with staying where I was and thought I was doing pretty good considering! BUT GOD…in His amazing grace, mercy, and never-ending love is drawing me into another layer of healing – He does not want me to remain in bondage to the past or to live in the fear, pain, and anguish of my soul. Thank you for sharing your journey, as I feel I am on a similar one, and it’s comforting to know that I am not alone, and to know that God is at work, not only in others lives, but in my own! All glory to God!

One of my favorite things to do is spend time at the ocean. I think it must be in my blood. My Scottish Mom and Grandmother both loved the beach. I was born in the port city of Glasgow, Scotland and lived on both the east coast and west coast of the US. Time to listen to my heavenly Father and let the wind blow out the cobwebs. It doesn’t get any better than this. At least, on this side of heaven. Glad to doing the book club with you Bonnie. Praise God!
