Well, we’ve reached the last chapters of my book Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest in our Online Spiritual Whitespace Book Club!
To celebrate, I have a special Lisa Leonard Connected Hearts Gold Necklace & Live Beautifully Journal Giveaway planned for us! So, be sure to read all the way to bottom of today’s blog post, brewed just for you!
These last chapters of the book are very practical. After exploring creating space in our hearts for rest, we look at the what, how, when, where — to create space in our schedules for Spiritual Whitespace.
Today’s blog post is an excerpt from the book. But, it’s also a blog post that went viral back in March 2011, when I first published it across different sites. Thousands of people were sharing it and it became the seed for the book I eventually wrote.
I hope you enjoy it because it all began with you here on the blog. God knew I could not make this life-changing journey without you here, to share in every unpredictable turn. And I’m so grateful for you. There would be no book without you…
I Stress, Therefore I Am
One challenge nobody warned me about when I became starry eyed pregnant was how laundry would soon become a stumbling block. Literally. I walk by the hallway where our laundry baskets are lined up, and it looks like raccoons got into them. Two to be exact. One who just turned five and the other still in diapers acts like he already is.
Some days I just give up.
I’m never caught up anyways. The weekend comes and my pile has exploded into a mountain slide of socks, jeans and regret. I only wish I could go outside and play. Instead, I end up folding bibs, listening to the washer and dryer turn the house into a laundromat.
Stress feels the same. I wake up and stress greets me, just like that pile of laundry.
Sometimes, I walk right by and refuse to acknowledge it’s existence. It can’t touch me.
Eventually, on a random moment, I’ll find myself trapped and surrounded by one anxious thought after another.
A Different Kind Of Stress
Can we ever be free from stress?
Stress seems to be so embedded in our modern lives, we’ve come to breathe it like oxygen.
Emails, Twitter, doctor appointments and a To Do list filled with growing unchecked boxes are all part of my reality.
Is it realistic to expect a stress-free life?
There was a season in my life I got fed up with the speed of everything. I reduced everything to a minimum. I did do less. But pairing down to the bare essentials made me lose a sense of wonder.
Introvert or extrovert, we were never made to only do life as maintenance. God designed us to be fully alive: creative, engaged with community and renewed by a sense of adventure.
Without these elements of creativity, adventure, community and soul care, we experience a different kind of stress.
Soul stress.
I did make a re-entry into the stream of new endeavors. It’s felt like stepping into the California rivers for whitewater rafting. Everything looks calm on the outside, but the underlying currents threaten to pull me under.
Are we left to choose only between inactivity or over-activity?
As people of faith, our focus goes beyond avoiding stress.
We pursue the opposite.
We pursue rest.
Rest As Ambition
Rest. It sounds inactive, doesn’t it?
I was surprised to find that rest is one of only three ambitions God explicitly calls out in the Bible.
Turns out Hesuchazo — the Greek word used for “quiet” and “rest” – is as important as preaching the Gospel and pleasing God.
“…excel still more,
and to make it your ambition
to lead a quiet (restful) life…”
~ Thessalonians 4:11
Ten Ways
I was so intrigued by the ambition to rest, I looked up Scriptures using Hescuchazo and categorized them into three buckets: creativity, adventure, community and soul care.
10 Ways To De-Stress & Enjoy Rest
{ Creativity }
1. Creative Exploration. Take time out for God’s art in you.
Engage in activity where you are free to be, without having to be functional or to judge how you are doing.
“For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.” Hebrews 4:10
2. A Creative Whitespace Getaway. Stop from your daily routine to feed your soul. Enjoy a change of everyday scenery. Take the time to enjoy soulful places with Jesus.
“Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.) ~ Jesus, Mark 6:31
{ Adventure }
3. Moving Things. Enjoy God in your new endeavors. That’s what Moses insisted. Time to leave and journey into a new chapter with God.
“My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” ~ God Ex. 33:14
4. The Wild Things. Enjoy the outdoors, soaking up nature. It brings our bodies and senses to rest.
“The whole earth is at rest and is quiet ; They break forth into shouts of joy.” Isaiah 14:7
5. Choose Joy. Investigate a new direction for joy, inspired by God’s goodness, even if you’re afraid.
“Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls.” ~ God, Jer. 6:16
{ Community }
6. The Real You. Seek out people where you can be your real self and laugh.
“Yes, brother, let me benefit from you in the Lord ; refresh (rest) my heart in Christ.” ~ Paul, Philemon 1:20
7. In-the-Skin 1-on-1. Get together with a friend 1-on-1 and share the deep things happening in your life. Choose to risk open-heart vulnerability over safety.
“I have come to have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed (rest) through you.” ~ Paul, Philemon 1:7
{ Soul Care }
8. Body Rest. Signal your body to physically rest knowing Jesus will carry you through. Sleep is a soul journey, not a turn-key solution.
“He enters into peace; They rest in their beds, Each one who walked in his upright way. (Isa. 57:2)
9. Quiet Rest. Enjoy intimately connecting with Jesus. Let go of the weight of guilt or the stress of what’s-next.
“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. ” Isaiah 30:15
10. Heart Rest. Spend time with Jesus. Rest is a gift we receive by bringing all parts of ourselves to Jesus
Then, turn around and offer that rest to others as your gift.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” ~Jesus Matt.11:28
One final rest inducing tip.
Call a friend to come over and fold laundry together (or just gab on the phone). Brew a cup of coffee or tea. Drink slowly. Enjoy.

9. Quiet Rest. Enjoy intimately connecting with Jesus. Let go of the weight of guilt or the stress of what’s-next.
We have BIG transitions coming up. I choose to run to Jesus in any moment of the day to bring my soul back to peace. I ask Him to speak and give me peace in the midst of so much unknown – He always speaks and brings me rest when I am ready to listen and surrender.
Thank you for serving with your writing, stories and encouragement. You have been an inspiration and a timely God send to many. 🙂
Marilyn

[…] I Stress, Therefore I Am: 10 Ways To De-Stress […]
Bonnie–thanks for the linkup and for moving me toward rest…
hi amy, it’s so nice to “see” you and hear the faith barista door open on earlier this week and know it’s you here, sharing a moment together… moving together towards rest. 🙂 hope you enjoy a soul beautiful weekend!
I would have never dreamed that opening up the deep parts of myself with another would lead to rest, but I have recently started doing just this – and the peace that sharing my burdens with another and praying together has brought has been amazing. The enemy lies to us and tells us that being vulnerable will end in disaster, but he is only trying to keep our hurts isolated and hidden. There is great healing power in learning to trust God and those He brings into our lives to walk the journey with us.
Blessings,
Kamea
hi kamea, i am just as surprised — beautifully with relief and joy — that opening up those deeper parts do lead to rest — as they lead us into the arms of Jesus. it’s a healing that’s so foreign for our experience, don’t you think? but, grateful we’re daring to find and experience it now.. even if it’s a step at a time. thanks so much for sharing, kindred!
I love that God gives us so many options to relieve stress. These ten ways are all ones that I’ve used from time to time (and need to use more often). Love this “Rest is a gift we receive by bringing all parts of ourselves to Jesus.” I’m so grateful that he WANTS us to come to him with all of us. Such a blessing. Thanks for sharing, Bonnie.
hi sweet friend… lisa, lisa, lisa… the years have passed and yet, our digital notes across the blogosphere feel as if we just had been talking yesterday. i agree.. it’s so curious..that as you say that he WANTS us to come to him with all of us. gonna read your post now… happy mother’s day! hope it’s sweet and touched with moments of beauty with your family!
My favorite favorite favorite way to de-stress is #6. I wall myself up and find no laughter in me and my bones ache for it, so when I sit with my kindreds on Friday’s we find ourselves brimming with laughter and we spill over onto one another and it is rich and warm and soothes my dry bones. we fill the room with flavors of chocolate and caramel and we indulge in the richness of friendship.
It is sweet and it is oh so good. Thank you for sharing yourself through this book with us. It has provided an awakening to the importance of soul rest and kindreds and sharing ourselves and our lives and failures and imperfections with others. To be the real us, confident in our brokenness. There is much beauty in such honest living.
hi charlotte, thanks for sharing your spaghetti / tea moment on FB this week.. been sweet to visist with you virtually through the pages of the book. keep enjoying spiritualwhitespace.. you are beloved!
Quiet rest…hmmmm…that’s what I need to do right now. Thank you!
hi sophia, so sweet to hear your voice… thnx for being here. it warms my heart to exchange notes to each other. 😉 hope your weekend is touched with unexpected moments of rest.
I really needed this reminder, today. Thanks, Bonnie! Been awhile since I read the book. I really should reread it. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read.–And I read lots of Christian books. Yours’ is a favorite blog as well.
hi sue, if you re-read again, open up a page in our journal.. makes my heart happy to imagine you writing the stories or words that speak as you read. and you are so sweet to encourage my heart. it makes a big difference to know there is a place for my words on your journey… inspires me to keep speaking my voice. 🙂 thank you, friend!
Bonnie, I really needed this today! Thank you for sharing this. It is really simple to take the time to de-stress. I can do this. Thank you again for sharing!
hi Sabrina, thank you again for sharing your beautiful photography with our community. they speak and touch us in ways that words cannot express… thank you for sharing with us what touches you!
Mothers day must be a mixture of emotions for you. Your Mother was an angry, emotionally abusive woman. You are nothing like her.Your kids experience so much love and encouragement from you.I encourage you to celebrate the incredible privilege it us to be a mother this weekend and enjoy your boys. Stress is a part if life but lowering the pressure we put on ourselves helps. Trying to be more than we are comes from old programming and we need to tune that out and know that God created us perfectly and wonderfully for His purpose not ours. He loves you so much.
thanks for your encouragement, lisamarie. yes, as i learn to grieve and let go of my dreams of what i wish — God turns my heart to be free to give myself permission to enjoy mother’s day with my boys. there are bittersweet moments, but i’m learning what you’ve shared so eloquently here. appreciate you!
As it should be enjoy every minute!
Your amazing!
I would love a getaway. Preferably 4 days at the ocean alone. Just me n God.
hi cindy… i hope there is a getaway idea somewhere bubbling in your heart.. and i pray it will make it onto your schedule. 😉 just you and God. sounds sublime. i hope you do it.. sweet kindred.
As it should be enjoy every minute!
Your amazing!
oops wrong place
Thank you so much Bonnie. Is there some way I can print this list? I want to look at it each day and I would love your permission to use it next year on our Women of Worth ministry day camp….something to encourage them to take time out and rest in the various ways…
Blessings Margaret
hi margaret, you can cut and paste onto a Word document. i would be honored for you to share this with your Women of Worth day camp! just include my name and URL FaithBarista.com onto the printout, so kindreds can come visit the virtual cafe here. 😉 Thank you so much !
There has been a lot of stress (financial trickling into everything else) in our house for months. I feel like I’ve just been existing and I know that I’m not living fully. This is a great list. The ones that spoke to me today are 1 & 2. Doing something where I’m free to be me and stepping away from the daily routine to feed my soul with a change of scenery.
hi diana, i encourage you to take time for what your soul is longing #1 & #2.. as you step away, you’ll be filled to return and weather the stress with Jesus having soothed your needs. Jesus often asked his disciples to pull away… even with the crowds… thanks for sharing, sweet kindred..
Bonnie I love all of these and I love the things your book and you call us to. I can definitely say it’s been transformative. I find I’m doing a little of all of these, but I hesitate to go outside. Yet last week my husband and I went and flew a kite together. There were a ton of spiritual things I took note of while doing it. Again thanks so much!
Hello Bonnie,
I got sucked into this book I had ordered that piqued my interest in an article I read on the web. It’s called….”The life-changing magic of tidying up (The Japanese art of decluttering and organizing.) I know that might seem as an odd choice for destressing but you would have to read the book. The author, Marie Kondo, writes it like a story, giving details about her youth and failures to tidy up. Some of it is funny. But she brings out a lot of good points and I would recommend it to anyone who is tired of The Mess! I plan on doing it, too, when I am finished with the book. You only need to do this ONCE and that’s it. I wondered if God was leading me to read this because in the process of decluttering I think He might reveal some things that I need to declutter spiritually.
[…] days ago, I decided I would write a blog post about finding spiritual whitespace, and link it to Faith Barista. Me, the overachiever, […]
Bonnie, Thank you for writing this post. It opened my eyes to the importance of whitespace and soul care. Your words encouraged me to write my own story about whitespace, which I linked to your blog. (My first time ever doing this! Hope I did it correctly.) My website is in the design process, so it looks very ‘vanilla’ right now, but she should be “fully dressed” in a few weeks. By the way, I was not successful in getting your Beloved Brews button to my blog post. Any tips? P.S. I love your book!
hi sharon, it’s wonderful to have you join the Beloved Brew community! looking forward to reading your post. just cut & paste the html for the Beloved Brews button in your post. here’s where the html is: https://www.thebonniegray.com/beloved-brews-button/
On a rainy Sunday afternoon, body rest sounds delicious in the form of a nap with the pitter pat of raindrops on the roof. But I borrowed a ukulele from school over the weekend so maybe I’ll create some music with a few simple chords. I am told that with the four we were taught, I can play hundreds of songs now!?
